James 1:19-21 The Message Post this at all the intersections, dear friends: Lead with your ears, follow up with your tongue, and let anger straggle along in the rear. God’s righteousness doesn’t grow from human anger. So, throw all spoiled virtue and cancerous evil in the garbage. In simple humility, let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden of your life.
As I sit in quiet and gather my thoughts, here we are on the periapsis of Black History Month! Remember Black History is 365 days not just one month! This country was built on the backs of Black Brown Indigenous and Other People of Color (BIPOC) people. Did you know the White House was built by slaves? As best expressed in the Negro National Anthem James Weldon Johnson’s “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
… “God of our weary years,
God of Our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus
Far on the way;
Thou who has by thy Might,
Led us into the light,
Keep us Forever in the path, we pray” …
Let us not forget the people and the things that have happened before us! The time is now to dismantle the systems which have oppressed, denied and dishonored! Each of us is responsible in creating better! It is time to pause! Though history is good as a context, we must move forward and be in the moment so to best prepare for what is next!
Pause, a verb, as defined by Dictionary.com is “to make a brief stop or delay; wait; hesitate.” When is the last time you paused? That is, took a moment to think about what you were going to say or do! We all know what a pause is when we simply pick up the TV remote! Pausing causes us to think about being more patient, to adjust our attitude, to gain a better understanding of what is, to move beyond what makes you comfortable, and to create the ability to be experience calm. Many times, you cannot control what will happen to you, but we can control the response! Say that!
As you know this is #StuffValSaid, but what do you say? Are you pausing? Can you hear God speaking to you in the pause? Are you going to create pause when needed? Here are a few things to consider:
• Attune – to be in touch
• Adjust – to create a condition of calm
• Understand – to know what is
• Wait – to stay still
My prayer for you is to find “your” pause button! God wants us to pause so we can receive the full blessing of the power of prayer! Isaiah 29:9 Pause and wonder! Blind yourselves and be blind! They are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink. Once you pause, go do the work God has given you to do! Be your own Black History. Pause will bring you peace! Love you!
