Humble Thy Self

James 4:10 New International Version “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”

What a two weeks it has been? We are still here and still standing! How are you my brothers and sisters? Don’t you love the stillness of the early morning and evening? I do! As we prepare for a new day, let us stop and humble ourselves for all God has done for us. The scripture says THEN he will lift you up! Thank you, Lord! No, the killing has not stopped, the disparities continue in healthcare, education and employment, our communities continue to be disinvested in, there are still many who are without food, clothing, and shelter but we must not stop doing what is right and good! I have a lot going on and have realized many depend on me, but remaining humble as it is about serving God’s people and meeting them where they are. With all that is going on, two things have touched my soul deeply over the last week. The first was a rare occasion where I watched TV and looked at a movie from beginning to end. For the umpteenth time, I watched Tyler Perry’s Medea’s Family Reunion. Regardless of your thoughts of the character Medea, there is always multiple lessons to gain. I will not recount the movie but what struck me most in this viewing was Aunt Ruby, the matriarch, taking it all in and how things have changed but remained the same! The wisdom of it all! The power of family and community! For this time and a time such as this, as played in the movie during Aunt’s Ruby walk through the generations of her people, we must “hold on just a little while longer, pray on just pray on a little while longer, fight on a little while longer, you know you gotta sing on just a little while longer, you gotta hold on a little while longer, everything gonna be alright!” Remember no matter how hard or hopeless it may seem, everything IS gonna be alright! The second was this Sunday’s sermon. The sermon was FIRE!!! It was the fourth Sunday of Easter…Good Shepherd Sunday. I really needed the word! It was THAT word! That is, we have all had an experience when the sermon was written just for you…had your name on it! A message of comfort and encouragement! Think not of self! The texts were Acts 4:5-12, 1 John 3:16-24, John 10:11-18 and Psalm 23. We need the Good Shepherd! We must be the Good Shepherd! We cannot give up! We must have fairness and equity for all! The victory is ours!

As you know this is #StuffValSaid, but what do you say? Are you humbling yourself so to do God’s work? Are you holding on or giving up? Are you a Good Shepherd?

Isaiah 40:31 New International Version “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

As said in Swahili, Ashay…” Be with us!!!” I love and honor you!!! Ubuntu “I am, because you are.”
