Proverbs 14:1-3 The Message “Lady Wisdom builds a lovely home; Sir Fool comes along and tears it down brick by brick. An honest life shows respect for God; a degenerate life is a slap in his face. Frivolous talk provokes a derisive smile; wise speech evokes nothing but respect.”
My brothers and sisters our sermon on Sunday was fire! As stated by Archbishop Rev. Demond Tutu “We are one family that is the human family.” How are you my brothers and sisters? I’m well! I’ve been out of the office which has given me time to pause, reflect, relax, and have some self-care! Yes, self-care! I’m loving the journey. I’m learning something new every day! I love learning! As I had time to be still, there was a recurrence in what I read, what music I’ve heard, things I’ve watched that we all need to be builders of the mind, body, and spirit for all.
Many children are introduced to Bob the Builder at an early age. Bob the Builder solves problems and get things done with a positive attitude with his pals who dig, haul, and build together. The theme song was “can we fix it?” Of course, the characters respond, “yes we can!” As our elders say “out of the mouths of babes.” Many of us know the story of Sojourner Truth. She was born a slave and many of her children were sold as slaves but through hope and determination, she escaped to freedom with one daughter. She did not let the unjust system keep her family apart but took legal action to regain a son! Just think of the courage to stay on task and focused to reach the goal and fight the systems. The very systems which were created then
are still fighting against us today! As we see in Proverbs 14:26 “The Fear-of-God builds up confidence and makes a world safe for your children.” Sojourner had a “secure Fortress” in a time which let’s say was not safe nor did it seem to lead to positive resolutions. It was nothing but God who got her through.
For these times such as now, we cannot give up! Many have become numb to the killings, shootings, violence, lack of health care, food, housing, and education which are ravaging our community especially Black and Brown! We need God because we cannot do what needs to be done without God! Each of us is a builder! God is listening! Share with him through prayer your concerns, your hopes and dreams while asking for grace and strength! We must build up others! We must be our children’s refuge and our brother’s and sister’s keeper! Let us lean on the everlasting arms of God, be kind, uplift those who need our help, smile, be a listening ear, and the list goes on! Let us be the kings and queens we are! As we are reminded every time we sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” So, yes, we can fix it! Focus on strengths, focus on character, focus on blessings, and focus on love! We must work together to regain, grow and proper! Enough is enough! The time is NOW!
As you know this is #StuffValSaid, but what do you say? How do you build a house with wisdom? What foundation is your house built on? How will be a builder?
As said in Swahili, Ashay…” Be with us!!!” I love and honor you!!! Ubuntu “I am, because you are.”
